Islam
puts great emphasis on cleanliness and Turkish baths known as "hamams"
have been part of the country's culture since mediaeval times. The
origin of the Turkish Bath goes back to the times of the Romans.
Just like in a Roman Bath there are mainly 3 sections in a Turkish
Bath; frigidarium, tepidarium and caldarium. They were adopted from
the Romans first by the Byzantines and then by the Ottomans. Visit
one of these historic bath houses
(hamams) and step back in time to
experience a wonderful and unusual ritual.
For
most westerners this is quite a different experience which shouldn't
be missed.
